a woman tattoo artist’s journal about work and life and things

backpieceBackpieces take some time to get finished. That’s a lot of surface to cover, it’s the biggest area you can get tattooed.

My own back is halfway done, and though it’s partly because the artist lives in Barcelona (hiya Victor!!!) it’s also because even when you get a lot done in a session, it is still not a lot of progress, just because of the scale of the piece.

I often have people come in for backpieces who aren’t really aware of the time and cost it will take. But it’s really worth it to put the time and money and effort in; having a single large backpiece is a wonderful feeling, it’s really a place where you can go all out and get something incredible done, and when it’s finished it gives a unity and center to a tattoo collection.

When you’re getting a big piece worked on, it’s nice to come in prepared to be there for a while; headphones, books, blanket, food. It’s also good to have a regular monthly-at-least appointment running, so you and the artist both get to see progress made on a regular basis. That keeps everyone excited and makes the work get done a bit quicker.

(The woman in the picture is my dear friend Michelle, I’m currently working on a big cover-up for her there, and she is awesome!!! Hi there lady!)

Hi there back! Haven’t been keeping up with my blog reading (or my own blog writing for that matter) so I missed this. We’ve had 4 sessions on this puppy???? (5 if you count the last time being a two day event. ) Day 1 = cake. Day 2 = holy shit. I would fly in monthly if I could. Miss you!
