I had a rough day-I kept working through it, though. I’ve been working with pen and ink a bit more, and also playing with some really thick paper I got yesterday. It’s twice the heft of the stuff I usually use. I also did a little bit of collaging…cutting up sketches and small paintings I did and sticking them together. I haven’t used any printed materials or anything, just my own drawings and art, in them. It was a fun little exercise. I did a lot of cut and paste with the exacto and glue back in the early 90s when I put out my zine but I haven’t done much of that stuff since then. A painter I know in Seattle sent me an email talking about collage as a way to loosen up and recycle old ideas or bits of art that had worked out only in small areas. This spurred me to try it for the day.
The new year had better be a lot easier than this last one. Or else I’ll give the universe a fucking rough knuckle sandwich. I think it will ba better year, for me and for everyone. So happy new year, and keep on making stuff! I know I will.
There’s a real joy to it. The tools feel good to use- round nibs, scratchy fountain pen, with the smooth handle. FW inks and dr. marten’s. Soft, soft, soft plastic brushes. And the smoothest paper surface you can afford. Then you prop yourself up and doodle. Doodle! With all these fancy art supplies! What could BE more fun?
